Kolibri Operating System

Kolibri v0.7.1.0

download!
Kolibri is a PC (x86/x86_64) operating system with kernel written entirely in 32-bit assembler using FASM. It’s based on MenuetOS and is licensed under the terms of GNU GPL2. Kolibri is an alternative OS and is not POSIX-compatible (although there’re some tries to implement POSIX subsystem in high-level languages). Main programming language we use is assembler of course, but there’re also examples of programs written in C, C++, FreePascal, Forth and others. Features include:

  • Preemptive multitasking, multithreaded kernel and applications
  • VESA graphics interface (with hardware-accelerated drivers), possibility of increasing display frequency (by decreasing resolution)
  • FAT12/16/32 (read/write), NTFS (incomplete, read-only), ISO9660 (read-only, with multisessions) support
  • TCP/IP stack with several Ethernet cards support
  • Sound subsystem for some AC’97 (Intel/nForce/SIS) codecs and SoundBlaster
  • Boot from floppy, hard drive, USB stick, CD and even right from Windows, without installation
  • Minimum RAM requirement is 8 MiB
  • Development environment: editor, macro-assembler (FASM) for kernel and applications
  • Fits on a single floppy

Please note that Kolibri can’t be used as your primary operating system right now. It’s still in early development stage and could probably be of more interest to programmers or testers rather than users.

Subversion server opens the door

We were recently working on a mechanism which would allow you to request SVN account without being familiar with who actually does this and how’s this done. All you need now is to fill up the form describing the reason you want to get your account with and a bit of information we’ll need to register you. Note that the page you’ll see is the one from the new site we’re also working on hardly, so it doesn’t contain your current registration information and you’ll have to provide it once again. This is a small issue and we’ll definitely try to migrate your accounts soon, so please be patient.

Also, please don’t abuse us with foolish requests. We won’t give you an account if the reason would be something like “I really want this one, guys!” or “Just wanted to request it to be sure I get one if the number is limited ;)”. Provide us with information on what are you going to do right after you get one, this is very appreciated.

Oh, and the link is: http://kolibrios.org:3000/i-want-svn.

Kolibri 0.7.1.0

After several months of waitning we’re glad to tell you new distro is there. Kolibri 0.7.1.0 doesn’t have any cardinal difference compared to 0.7.0.0. This release was stipulated by call of the times rather – it’s necessity to keep distance between releases. The fact that distro came out actually shows sufficient groundwork stability however no one is goof-proof. You may help us making Kolibri better. If you have any info on bugs – join us, let’s make Kolibri the best ;)

New features at KolibriOS.org server

Anonymous access to FTP server has been set up today to allow users without own homepage to upload their work. Files are also available through HTTP protocol for convenience. User this server only for the right purpose; files having no connection to the project will be deleted without warning. Additional request is to use existing and create new folders to categorize content. Let’s not create the mess here ;-)

Another good news is that now it’s possible to access our SVN server through HTTP. You may use http://kolibrios.org/repos to checkout and commit your changes.

New forums

Finally we’ve got our own discussion board. It’s based on phpBB3 engine and located at http://board.kolibrios.org/. You may also get there by selecting appropriate link from this site’ main menu.

I have to add here that now most of the posts are in Russian since this data was transferred from our old board. In no case should you be afraid to write in English. We’ll answer your posts as long as we understand them (and we do, if they are in either Russian or English).
